Plans through the ACA

Plans available through the federal Health Insurance Marketplace®, for most people under 65 who don't have coverage through work or a government program.

Tax credits

Most people qualify for help

Premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions are based on household income and family size. They can substantially lower what you pay each month.

Real options

Compare across carriers

A licensed insurance agent compares plans by doctor, hospital, prescription, and price, so you see what's actually available where you live before you decide.

What it actually is

The ACA Marketplace, in plain English.

The Health Insurance Marketplace® was set up by the Affordable Care Act in 2010. It's where people under 65 who don't have coverage through an employer or a government program (like Medicare or Medicaid) can shop for individual and family health plans.

All plans cover the same set of essential health benefits, including preventive care, hospitalization, prescription drugs, mental health, and maternity care. Plans are sold in tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) that describe how the costs are split between you and the insurer.

Most people who enroll qualify for a premium tax credit that lowers their monthly premium. The amount depends on household income, family size, and the plans available in your area. Some people also qualify for cost-sharing reductions that lower deductibles and copays on Silver plans.

Open Enrollment is usually November 1 through January 15. Outside that window, you typically need a qualifying life event (like losing other coverage, moving, or having a baby) to enroll through a Special Enrollment Period. A licensed insurance agent can confirm whether you qualify and walk you through what's available where you live.

Common questions

Answers, in plain English.

The questions most people ask before they call. If yours isn't here, an agent can walk you through it.

What is the ACA Marketplace?
The federal Health Insurance Marketplace® is where individuals and families under 65 can shop for and enroll in health coverage. It was created by the Affordable Care Act in 2010. All plans cover the same essential benefits; what varies is the carrier, network, premium, and out-of-pocket structure.
Do I qualify for a subsidy?
Most enrollees qualify for a premium tax credit. Eligibility depends on household income, family size, and whether you have access to affordable coverage through an employer. A licensed insurance agent can run the numbers for your specific situation and show you what plans look like with the credit applied.
When can I enroll?
Open Enrollment runs from November 1 through January 15 in most states. Outside that window, you typically need a qualifying life event, like losing other coverage, getting married, having a baby, or moving, to enroll through a Special Enrollment Period.
What if I have employer coverage?
If your employer offers coverage that meets federal affordability and minimum value standards, you generally aren't eligible for a Marketplace tax credit. You can still buy a Marketplace plan, but at full cost. If employer coverage is unaffordable or doesn't meet standards, you may still qualify for help. The agent can walk you through how your employer plan compares.
How much does coverage cost?
Premiums depend on the plan, your age, where you live, household size, and whether you qualify for a tax credit. After tax credits, many enrollees pay a fraction of the sticker price. The agent will quote actual numbers, with and without the credit applied, so you can see what coverage really costs for you.
Why use a licensed agent instead of going to HealthCare.gov directly?
You're welcome to use HealthCare.gov directly, and many people do. A licensed insurance agent can help if you want someone to walk you through plan differences, check whether your doctors and prescriptions are covered, and stay with you if questions come up during the year. Agent services are at no extra cost to you.
