How insurance licenses work.
CoverageBeacon (operated by QLG Media LLC) is not a licensed insurance broker, agent, or producer. We do not sell insurance policies. We connect consumers with licensed insurance agency partners who hold the producer licenses required to sell coverage in the states they serve.
Looking for the licenses behind a specific agent who called you? Ask the agent for their National Producer Number (NPN) and look it up directly on the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). That registry shows you exactly what states they're licensed in and what coverage lines they're authorized to sell.
Who holds the producer licenses
The licensed insurance producer licenses that make it possible for you to enroll in a policy are held by:
- The licensed insurance agencies listed on our Marketing Partners page
- The individual agents who work for those agencies
Each agency holds licenses in the states it serves. Each individual agent holds their own state-specific producer license.
How to verify a producer license
Verifying a license is straightforward and free. Here's how:
- Ask any agent who calls you for their National Producer Number (NPN) and the name of their agency
- Visit nipr.com and use the National Insurance Producer Registry public lookup
- Enter the NPN to see active licenses, states licensed in, and coverage lines authorized
You can also verify licenses on your state's insurance department website — most state insurance departments offer free public license lookups.
Insurance department contact information
Every state has an insurance department that regulates licensed insurance producers and handles consumer complaints. If you have a concern about an agent or agency, you can contact your state's department directly. A directory is maintained by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
